How can we use molecular genetics to determine the sex of birds?

1

i know that in some geese for example, they have a ZW set of sexual chromosomes, and males have ZZ, and you can test these birds for this, but how did you ever find out in the first place that this was the case?? because birds have internal gonads, did they just kill one, determine the sex, and then look at the gentic make up??

You don’t have to necessarily kill a bird to determine it’s sex – look at peacocks and peahens, cocks and hens etc etc. And you seem to have answered your own question – molecular genetics is used to determine the identity of the sex chromosomes present.
