What’s The Chance Of Conceiving Twins, Based On The Father’s Family Genetics?
This is just something that I have been wondering about for a while.
Say, for example, the father has identical twin brothers. Would this increase the chance of conceiving twins? Or is it more or less based on the mother’s genes? I tried looking this up elsewhere on the interwebs, but couldn’t find a specific enough answer. Thought maybe Y!A could help me out tonight ![]()
For the record, I’m not pregnant, nor do I plan on getting pregnant any time soon, I’m just curious.
Thanks in advance!

It has nothing to do with the male side at all. Identical twins are just a random chance happening. They occur when one egg splits into two. Genetics have nothing to do with how they are formed. Fraternal (unidentical) twins do sometimes run in families, but this is because they are formed from two separate eggs that the woman has released at the same time. Some women inherit the tendency to release multiple eggs at once, and this is why fraternals can be genetic. Even if every member of the father’s family is a twin, it won’t effect if his children are twins or not, because it is all down to female genetics and what happens when the woman ovulates.
Identical twins is purely a chance happening (when the egg splits) and is not determined by mom or dad.
Fraternal twins are the result of the mother producing two eggs that are both fertilized. The dad’s side of the family and twin history has nothing to do with who has twins. This is much to my hubby’s dismay, as he loves to “take credit” for our twins!! Hope this helps!
I have twins all through my family… My Dad’s sisters are twins. My Aunties are twins. My Dads cousins are twins. My Mums cousins are twins. My husband has twin cousins too. But I am only expecting 1 baby. Even know everyone joked I would have to be having twins with all the twins in our family…
Fraternal twins are genetic, but only through the womans side.
Anyone can have identical twins, there are no genetic links when it comes to identical twins.
